The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
