In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
